Cisco Adds to Carrier Ethernet Products

Today Cisco introduced the Cisco ME 6500 Series Ethernet Switch and the Cisco ONS 15310 Metro Access (MA) multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP) which delivers Carrier Ethernet services over synchronous optical network, or SONET infrastructures. The Cisco ME 6500 Series Ethernet switches are available in two models and are available starting at a list price of $24,000. The Cisco ONS 15310-MA platform is also available now and a basic configuration model starts at a list price of $18,000.

Lucent buy Riverstone for $170 million

Lucent today decided to buy a Carrier Ethernet company, Riverstone, for $170 million. Lucent has alreay been reselling Riverstone boxes for some time now. Riverstone's stock price shot up by 81% to give it a market capitalization of $125 million.

ClariPhy Communications, an Irvine-based startup, is developing mixed-signal ICs that set new performance benchmarks for multi-gigabit per second (Gbit/s) communications applications. The company's initial products target the emerging 10GBASE-LRM (LRM) Ethernet standard.

Verizon Business announced today that it has expanded the availability of its Ethernet access services in key cities in the United States, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The expansion will enable large business and government customers to seamlessly link their offices -- via an advanced, cost-effective high-speed data and voice network -- not only locally and regionally, but nationally and globally as well. In addition, Verizon Business' Ethernet services will enable customers to more easily use Internet protocol (IP) applications, such as streaming media and distance-learning, at all of their company locations.
